Sky Watch #105: Golden State

26 Aug

I really believed that if gold was not found in California, this great state would still be toting the monicker GOLDEN STATE because of these golden hills.

In the summer our hills are covered in dry grass that appear to be golden under our abundant California summer sun. Of course these same hills and these same dry grass cause great distress during fire season.

I would like to report that we have finally had our taste of summer heat. Bayside, we had two days of 90+ degree weather. The temp was expected to reach a high of upper 80s, but on Monday we even reached triple digit. Remind me not to whine or even talk about how cool our summer has been because these three days of mini heat wave has shown me that I am not a hot weather person.

The color in these photos is gorgeous. You’ve shown California is in fact the Golden State. The sky in each of these photos is beautiful as well.

I learned a long time ago not to long for hotter days…eventually you get what you are asking for and immediately regret it!

    Beautiful shots.

These shots bring back a lot of memories–driving through the San Joaquin Valley to visit my father. That golden chaparral is a reminder of the relationship of fire to procreation in nature. Best not to build on those hills; just let them look gorgeous. Fire-climax vegetation needs to burn periodically, so it would be better for us all if we just enjoyed it, and then left.

    Thanks for these lovely shots!

The golden hills with the beautiful shade of blue in the sky is gorgeous. You live in a beautiful part of the world. We are finally getting a break in the heat. I’m sorry it hit you but hopefully you won’t have to deal with it very long.

Whoopppsss…we’re having the same temp but I guess a little higher than where you are. We’ve got 100’s for the past days and thanks it’s a little cooler now. Anyway, great photos and I love the great contrast of the blues and the golds here.

Wonderful shots, I love that golden color in the hills. I’m not a hot weather person either, we’ve only reached 90 once at my house this summer and that’s fine with me!

When I got here, I expected California to be greener so the golden hills took me by surprise. But I’ve gotten used to it and love the sloping golden hills. Love its contrast against the blue skies.

Yes, I’ve often thought that, we are the golden state even without the gold in our hills. I didn’t appreciate it when I was a child, being driven through the hills in a non-air-conditioned car. Now I love our summertime golden hills.

What a familiar sight these golden hills are. The grass almost looks like velvet! Beautifully captured with the gentle mass of clouds hovering above the ridge line – nice contrast against the blue skies. All that’s missing is a lone black and white cow! Enjoy the last of summer!
