My World #31: It’s Cherry Picking Time

08 Jun

When I first moved in the Bay Area, my SIL and brother took to me to cherry picking in Brentwood.  Nope, not the OJ Simpson Brentwood, but the Northern California agricultural town Brentwood.  I had a lot of fun.  At that time, the place was all agricultural lands where miles and miles of orchards can be found.  I’m sure you know what the deal is with fruit picking.  One gets a bucket and enters the orchard, picks fruits and samples the produce, and then picks some more and the yield will be weighed outside the orchard.

That was my one and only time I went to cherry picking, although I thought I would return every year, until two weeks ago when our friends sent us an invite and picked us to go cherry picking.  In the mid 90s with the boom of real estate, many of the farm lands were converted into housing.  I was even expecting to see very little of the orchards to be still around.  There’s quite a few of them, I found out.  We went to a roadside orchard for cherry picking where I took these photos.  I picked enough for us and some for my co-workers, then we moved on to another orchard where peaches, plums, pluots (hybrid of plum and apricots), apricots, blackberries.  Plums were ripe but the other fruits are not yet ready to pick. It’s always nice to see a lot of people going to the farm/orchard and pick their fruits. I especially love to see kids seeing where their fruits actually come from.

MY WORLD is a weekly meme showcasing interesting places all over the world.

Beautiful! We have cherries and apples at our house, but we’re farther north and they’re only just blossoming. I’d love to go to a real orchard, a big one, and have a day out like yours. Enjoy your cherries!

I love getting out in the orchards, though they don’t look quite as good as that!

Yummy cherries. I have not eaten cherries for a long time. Certainly we can buy them here but very, very expensive and nothing tasty like fresh from the tree. We had a few cherry trees in Switzerland. Those cherries look superb.

Great shots and I enjoyed this post so much. I also think it’s so important for children to see where the food comes from.

There’s a pick your own fruit farm close to here I should try it.

I’ve never gone to anything like this but I would like to, at least once. I’m not always thrilled with the fruit at the markets. Maybe I’d be more thrilled if I picked them myself.
    🙂 Love the shots.

Oh, yum – our fruit is not quite in season yet, but it’s always wonderful when it gets here. It’s the best part of spring, and what better excuse to be outside?

There is always things that you think you can do almost every year. Then 10 years pass and it hasn´t been done. Good that you had the chance now.

I went cherry picking once so this brings back that memory. Nothing like eating fresh cherries straight from the branch. Of course we rinsed it a bit and chomp away in the bus.

Yum, cherry pie..I can taste it now! It sounds like you and your friends had a delightful day filling your baskets. Its nice to know the farms are still there. Those lands are our fruit bowl, we need to preserve them. Wonderful photo, too.

    Oh yum … I love cherries !!!

I haven’t been to a pick your own orchard, since I moved to the US. Not many of them around this area. However, I used to go to them all the time, back in New Zealand. Great fun !
