My World #28: Bay To Breakers

18 May

The Bay to Breakers is an annual footrace which takes place in San Francisco, California. The name reflects the fact that the race starts at the northeast end of the downtown area a few blocks from The Embarcadero (adjacent to San Francisco Bay) and runs west through the city to finish at the Great Highway (adjacent to the Pacific coast, where breakers crash onto Ocean Beach). The race is 7.46 miles (12 kilometers) long, and is run on the third Sunday in May. (Wikipedia)

The marathon was held today (Sunday, May 17, 2009).  These photos were from last year’s marathon. I did not participate/join/watch this year.

And while this is SF’s version of the other cities marathon (NY, Boston, etc), this footrace is more known around these parts for the totally SF flavor of the participants.  Real atheletes, serious participants join every year.  But mostly what gets a lot of buzz are the ordinary people who come to join the marathon in costumes, sometimes without costumes at all.  Last year, those were not the only two I saw and photographed without costumes.

You know it’s a serious footrace if Elvis had to rise from the grave to join it, right?  It wouldn’t be a complete spectacle without the king.

The parade/marathon is filled with college-aged kids in costumes.  These people asked to be photographed. I heard this year the organizers/city are banning public intoxication and no nudity.  Actually last year newscasters asked people not to come naked as requested by the organizers, but people still came without clothes.

I enjoyed watching last year. I walked with the participants 4 miles to the finish line and another four to get my car which I parked at a McDonald’s parking lot.  Eight miles of shooting people, that was fun.  But as expected I had a little souvenir from the city of SF on my car’s windshield. Well that was worth the $40 that I had to pay for parking 🙂

Did you enjoy my world?  There are plenty more like this one from different parts of the world, all you do is visit MY WORLD for wonderful post all over the world or join the meme yourself.

I think my brother has run this race a few times. He’s never talked about the people without costumes.

Ewok: That one shot looked like a racy race. Neat captures from your city by the bay.

Interesting race. I wonder what it is about people that makes them want to act a fool. LOL! And what makes people think someone wants to see their naked bum?

Oh, and yes, the beach in my photos is the one mentioned on t.v. a lot.

Interesting event. Hahaha on the “no costumes” comment in your post. Sounds like the story book about the Emperor’s new clothes.

It is illegal to walk naked over here in public…lol

Well worth spending $40 on this delightful entertainment and think of all the exercise you got as well.I don’t mind nakedness, after all we all have a body, but am not so fond when people with aprons of fat and great beer gut go parading themselves. That to me is indecent. Nice post.

Well, you had a shocker for this week. 😉
People are without clothes here, because they are too poor to afford it or they are too religious. Hmmm… the contrasts!

This can happen only in San Francisco!! I love the city where everything is allowed. Thanks for the post – it made me nostalgic about the city. Those pictures brought a big smile to my face.

    Keep up the good work.

Now this looks like a lot of fun. Maybe in San Francisco they think a marathon is a fast parade.

That looks like a fun walk to take part in 🙂

Love the Elvis shot … proof that he’s still alive an well and grown taller 🙂

When I took a second look at the nude shot, I realised that the guy was a walking musical score 🙂 It’s funny to see that the people around them don’t even seem to be noticing, except for the two men and the woman, right in front of them . 🙂

    Neat shots !

It is like a big carnivale. It is probably much more fun to watch and take photos of not so serious runners!

Definitely much much more fun than watching these people than the serious atheltes.
