Fresh Sugarcane Juice, Anyone?, originally uploaded by airam94564.
I am aware that I told every body last week that I was intent on going to Napa/Sonoma Valley over the weekend. It did not happen. My husband was busy with church meetings/retreat. I was busy with chores. Then we had dinner with friends to finalize some travel plans for next week.
Anyway, let me tell you that California is my adopted home. It is also my husband’s adopted home. I was born and raised in the Philippines. He was from Bangladesh. We met and fell in love at work (yeah!).
In January of last year we had to go home to Bangladesh. While there one day we chanced upon this ambulant cart selling fresh sugarcane juice. I thought it was very unique. We did not have this in the Philippines; well at least when I was there. One day last month as I was cleaning out my archives I found this video/clip and husband suggested I share it with you all/blog about it. Enjoy the video. Nope I did not have any. Now I wish I tried it.

Oooh… that looks so delish! I used to love chewing on sugarcanes as a kid. You couldn’t really swallow it diba? But that juice looks interesting.

I’ve never tried that either. The device pressing the sugar cane looks like the wringer on a washing machine my mother used to have.

I’ve never heard of sugarcane juice. Great post and fun to be introduced to something new.

Signs are printed in Hindi in Bangladesh? I would have guessed Urdu since it was once West Pakistan. (The two are virtually the same when spoken, but completely different when written.)

The bushfires are horrible. We also felt for the people who lost their houses in the USA in California. Such a tragic way to lose everything even peoples lives.

I never heard of sugar cane juice being sold, but I know kids in south Louisiana love the sweetness out of a chunk of sugar cane.

Maybe I would have tried it ewok, but I know it’d be much the same taste from the sugar cane chunks that we usually have here. Makes me remember how I loved it, as a child. The sweetness that we never get enough of it, wanting more and more. 🙂

Really interesting – it never occurred to me that you could do that. Do you know anyone who’s tasted it? I’d think it would be awfully sweet, but your idea of making into a sugarcane margarita (or mojito, my current fav) makes it sound much more appealing.
ewok said: Yeah I’m more of a mojito gal myself. I am not surprise if some bar in Bangkok already flavors their drink with sugarcane, it being readily available there or in any Asian clubs/pubs/restaurants. Who knows.

I have never seen sugar cane juiced before. My family live in Mexico and we buy chunks of sugar cane than are soaked in lime and salt. I love it and eat it until my mouth is getting sore. It is refreshing in hot weather and good on a hike.

We get fresh sugarcane juice in plenty here, they taste good with a dash of ginger and mint juice. Tastes awesome! Don’t miss it next time you get a chance.

It probably tastes good as I used to chew sugarcane when I was a kid. it used to be abundant and can be easily bought from the markets. That’s really cool way of selling it 🙂

I haven’t tried sugercane juice, but I have seen stalls selling it. I watched a man pedaling a bike that was crushing the cane as he pedaled. But we didn’t try it. I thought it must taste rather woody but probably sweet.

I haven’t had a piece of sugar cane in a very, very long time. I’m trying to imagine the juice from it. Very interesting. I’m glad you posted this. Did this fella get mad at you for taking the video? He didn’t look too happy. 🙂

Well that explains a lot. Big difference between Bengal and Bangladesh. Hindi’s spoken all over India, but I suspect you’ll find as many people speaking Bengali in Kolkatta (and elsewhere in Bengal) as anything. Same family of languages I believe (Indo-Aryan) but still pretty different. But I wouldn’t be surprised to find signs printed in Hindi there.
